The UK eclipse map: where the Sun goes darkest

One dot per locality in our dataset, 220 of them, shaded by how much of the Sun the Moon covers at maximum. The gradient runs diagonally across the country — 96.4% in the far south-west, 89.6% in the north-east — because the path of totality passes below and to the west of the British Isles and never comes ashore here. Tap or hover any dot for its name and figure; the labelled cities link straight to their times.

Obscuration across the United Kingdom, locality by locality

Map of the United Kingdom shaded by how much of the Sun is covered during the eclipse of 12 August 2026 The United Kingdom drawn with one dot per locality in our dataset, coloured from pale gold to dark brown according to the percentage of the Sun covered at maximum — from 89.6% around Aberdeen in the north-east to 96.4% at Hugh Town in the far south-west. Major cities are labelled with their own figure. No part of the United Kingdom is inside the path of totality. This map is our own approximation. Each dot is one locality from our dataset, projected equirectangularly (longitude and latitude straight onto x and y, scaled by the cosine of the mid latitude) — it is not the official track of the Moon's shadow, and it deliberately draws no coastline. For the official UK view of this eclipse see the Royal Observatory Greenwich ; for the shadow track itself, our interactive map of the path across Spain.

The nearest point of the path of totality to the deepest place on this map, Hugh Town, is Cariño ( A Coruña, Spain) — about 699 km away in a straight line, with 1m 47s of totality. Everywhere on this map is outside it.

How to read the map

Percentage of the Sun covered

The darker the dot, the more of the Sun's disc disappears at maximum: from 89.6% at the pale end to 96.4% at the dark end. Only 20 of the 220 places reach 94%, the point at which the daylight itself starts to look wrong.

Labelled cities

The larger dots carry a label with their real figure and link to that city's page, with first contact, maximum, last contact and the Sun's height. Every other dot has the same data behind it — the full list is on the ranking page.

No band of totality

You will not find a golden band on this map, because there is none to draw over the UK: 0 of our 220 localities are inside the path. The dashed callout points towards where it actually runs, out in the Atlantic and on towards northern Spain.

The ten darkest dots

All in the far south-west, closest to the shadow's track — with the local time of maximum (British Summer Time (BST, UTC+1) — the clock time everywhere in the UK on 12 August 2026):

  1. Hugh Town — 96.4% at 19:16 (England, Sun 13.4° high)
  2. Penzance — 95.8% at 19:16 (England, Sun 13° high)
  3. St Ives — 95.7% at 19:16 (England, Sun 13° high)
  4. Camborne — 95.5% at 19:16 (England, Sun 12.9° high)
  5. Redruth — 95.5% at 19:16 (England, Sun 12.9° high)
  6. Falmouth — 95.4% at 19:16 (England, Sun 12.7° high)
  7. Truro — 95.3% at 19:16 (England, Sun 12.8° high)
  8. Newquay — 95.2% at 19:15 (England, Sun 12.8° high)
  9. St Austell — 95.1% at 19:15 (England, Sun 12.6° high)
  10. Plymouth — 94.7% at 19:15 (England, Sun 12.2° high)

Wales 14 92.1–94.3% Milford Haven (94.3%)

How this map was made

No coastline was drawn: the outline you see is the 220 localities of our own UK dataset, nothing more. Circumstances computed for the coordinates of each locality with JPL DE440s ephemerides, the same pipeline that powers the Spanish and Icelandic pages on this site. All times are British Summer Time (UTC+1). The colour scale is linear between the three stops shown in the legend. Distances quoted here are straight-line distances between coordinates. And whatever the shade of your dot, the rule is the same everywhere on this map: this is a partial eclipse from end to end, so certified EN ISO 12312-2 filters are needed for every second of it.
