The 50 best villages in Spain for the total eclipse of 12 August 2026
This is not a list of opinions: we computed the eclipse circumstances for all 8,132 Spanish municipalities and sorted them by seconds of totality. The national maximum is in El Franco (Asturias), with 1m 50s of completely covered Sun; the most reliable sky, however, is in the Ebro valley. Combining duration and climatology, the best spot in Spain comes out as Pozuel de Ariza (Zaragoza).
How this ranking is computed
- Totality duration per municipality: our own computation for each municipality’s coordinates with JPL DE440s ephemerides, cross-checked against the IGN (eclipses.ign.es). Ties are broken by the Sun’s altitude above the horizon.
- Clear-sky probability per zone: © AEMET (May 2026 analysis) and Eclipsophile. Each zone carries its percentage and its source on this page.
- How many municipalities: Municipality count from the IGN/CNIG municipal boundaries (georef-spain-municipio dataset, 2022 snapshot); non-municipal entities (commons, joint boards and the plazas de soberanía) are excluded.
- Villages only: provincial capitals are excluded; their times are in When is the eclipse?.

The climate zones, with sources
Ebro valley
Under 30% average cloud cover for the date; 12 August has been clear in 18 of the last 21 years (≈ 86%).
Castilla y León plateau
68–78% probability of clear skies depending on the province (Soria, 73%). We use 73% in the computation.
Galicia and the Cantabrian coast
The climatologically riskiest stretch of the path: 30–50% probability of clear skies. We use the midpoint (40%).
Álava and Rioja Alavesa
Straddles the Cantabrian zone (30–50% clear skies) and the Ebro valley (under 30% average cloud cover): the further south, the better.
Balearic Islands
Mallorca has roughly a 75% probability of clear skies, but the Sun will be only 2–4° high during totality.
Catalan coast
Intermediate climatology: better than the Cantabrian coast, behind the Ebro valley and the Castilian plateau. No published percentage in our sources.
