That evening the path of totality cuts diagonally across Spain, from Asturias to the Balearic Islands: 3,952 municipalities out of the country's 8,132, across 31 provinces, will see the Sun disappear completely between 20:27 and 20:33 local time. It is the only totality in continental Europe — and it comes with one mistake you cannot undo: Madrid and Barcelona are not in it.

Madrid and Barcelona do not see totality
This is where half the trips go wrong, and it is not a detail: Madrid reaches 99.9% and Barcelona reaches 99.8% of the Sun covered. A hair short — and that hair changes everything: no corona, no daytime darkness, no moment when the glasses come off. A 99.9% partial stays a partial.
The good news: from both cities the path is under two hours' drive. North from Madrid (Segovia, Valladolid, Guadalajara); south-west from Barcelona (Tarragona, Reus). Routes, timings and the classic mistakes on the way back.
A very low Sun: the detail that decides the spot
Inside the Spanish path the Sun sits between 1.4° and 12.2° above the horizon at maximum. That is very low: a building, a hill or a line of trees is enough to hide the whole eclipse. You are not looking for “a nice view” but for a clear western horizon, checked the evening before at the same hour — the only rehearsal that does not lie.
In exchange, a low Sun means more atmosphere in the way: the corona will stand against a sky that still has colour. Weather counts double here, and our ranking crosses totality duration with cloud statistics.
Glasses: what can actually reach you, country by country
Through every partial phase — over an hour before and after — looking at the Sun without a certified filter burns the retina with no immediate pain. A 99.9% partial eclipse is not a total one: no corona, no daytime darkness, and no moment when the glasses can come off. From either city the path is under two hours' drive away.
What time is totality in Spain?
There is no single time: the shadow crosses the country in a few minutes. Maximum happens between 20:27 and 20:33 local Spanish time (CEST, one hour ahead of the UK and Ireland). Every town has its own, to the second, across our 8,132 pages.
