The complete Ireland guide to the eclipse of 12 August 2026

Everything you need for one evening: how to protect your eyes, what happens hour by hour, where to stand when the Sun is barely a hand’s width above the horizon, and — the part most guides skip — an honest answer to “is it worth travelling for the real thing?”. All the times here are Irish Standard Time (IST, UTC+1) and all the figures are computed for Irish coordinates.

1. Eye safety: the one rule with no exception in Ireland

In a total eclipse there is a short window, inside the path of totality, when the Sun is completely covered and it is safe to look with the naked eye. Ireland does not get that window. The deepest point in the country, Tralee and Killarney in Co. Kerry, reaches 97.1% — and the remaining sliver of photosphere is still blindingly bright. From 18:09 to 20:08, everywhere in the country, certified filters stay on.

What counts as a certified filter

  • EN ISO 12312-2 printed on the frame of the eclipse glasses — the international standard for direct solar viewing. Filters that comply cut the Sun’s visible light by roughly a factor of 100,000 and block the infrared and ultraviolet too.
  • A supplier you can check. Counterfeits are the real hazard, not the eclipse. The American Astronomical Society keeps the international reference list of vetted manufacturers, importers and filters: eclipse.aas.org/eye-safety/viewers-filters.   • Undamaged. Hold the glasses up to a bright indoor lamp: you should see nothing but the lamp’s filament, faintly. Any scratch, pinhole, crease or separation from the frame and they go in the bin. Old glasses are fine if they are undamaged and certified — the standard has no expiry date, damage does.

What is never safe

Sunglasses of any darkness, several pairs stacked, smoked glass, exposed photographic film, CDs, mylar crisp packets, welding glass below shade 14, a phone screen, or “just a quick glance”. And never look through binoculars, a camera viewfinder or a telescope while wearing eclipse glasses: the instrument concentrates the sunlight and will burn straight through the filter and into your eye. Optics need their own certified filter fitted over the front of the lens.

If you would rather not look up at all, a pinhole projector works beautifully and costs nothing: punch a small hole in card, hold it in the sunlight and let the image of the Sun fall on a second sheet of card. During the eclipse the little disc of light becomes a crescent. Same trick with a kitchen colander, or with the gaps between your fingers.

2. Eclipse day, step by step

The timings below are Dublin’s, from the dataset. Everywhere else in the country runs within about six minutes of them — first contact happens between 18:09 and 18:15 nationwide, and maximum between 19:07 and 19:13. Your own town’s exact times are on its own page.

  1. During the afternoon

    Check the glasses, charge the phone, and — this is the step people skip — go and look at your viewing spot in daylight. Stand where you plan to stand and look west-north-west, low down. If a hedge, a gable end or a hill is in the way, you have found out in time.

  2. 17:53 — get into position

    Arrive at least twenty minutes early. Nothing is visible yet, and that is the point: you want to be settled, not parking.

  3. 18:12 — first contact

    The Moon touches the western edge of the solar disc. Through the glasses you will see a tiny flat spot, then a growing bite. To the naked eye — glasses on, always — absolutely nothing has changed.

  4. 18:42 — about half the Sun gone, and nobody notices

    This is the moment that surprises people. Half the Sun is missing and the afternoon looks completely ordinary. The human eye adapts, and the remaining half of the Sun is still overwhelming. Keep checking every few minutes through the filter.

  5. 19:01 — the light starts to go wrong

    The last ten minutes before maximum are the ones worth being outdoors for. The daylight thins and cools, shadows sharpen because the Sun has narrowed to a slender crescent, the temperature drops and it often goes noticeably quiet. Look at the ground under a tree: the gaps between the leaves act as pinholes and scatter dozens of little crescent Suns across the pavement.

  6. 19:10 — maximum in Dublin

    94.0% of the Sun covered, with the Sun 14.7° above the horizon. Elsewhere the figure runs up to 97.1% in the south-west. It will look like a strange, flat, metallic dusk — and it lasts only a couple of minutes at its deepest.

  7. 19:21 onwards — the whole thing in reverse

    The light returns faster than it left, or seems to. Most people pack up here; if you stay you can watch the crescent close through the glasses.

  8. 20:05 — last contact

    The Moon clears the disc. In Dublin the whole event has taken 1 h 52 min, and the Sun sets afterwards, not during — nowhere in the Irish dataset does the Sun go down while still eclipsed.

3. Where to stand: the low-Sun problem

If you read one paragraph on this page, read this one. At maximum the Sun will be only 14.4–16.6° above the horizon everywhere in Ireland — about a hand’s width held at arm’s length — low in the west-north-west and sinking. That single number matters more than the percentage. A row of trees, a two-storey house, a drumlin or a bank of coastal haze is more than enough to hide the entire eclipse from you. Choose the horizon first and the town second.

What a good spot looks like

  • A west-facing coast. The whole Atlantic seaboard — Kerry, Clare, Galway, Mayo, Sligo, Donegal — combines the deepest obscuration in the country with a horizon made of open water. If you have any choice at all, go west.
  • High ground with a clear western view. Inland, a modest hill beats a spectacular mountain that has a bigger mountain to its west. Look at where the Sun sets from your spot a few evenings before: that is exactly where the eclipse will be.
  • Piers, strands, headlands, big open fields, playing pitches. On the east coast the shoreline faces the wrong way, so look for height or width instead of the sea.
  • Avoid narrow valleys, forest edges, city streets that run north–south, and anywhere you would need to move at the last minute.

One consolation of the low Sun: you do not need to travel for depth. Between the best and worst place in the country there are only 3.4 percentage points of obscuration — a real difference in the ranking, an invisible one to the eye. Fifteen minutes to a clear horizon beats four hours to Kerry.

4. What you will and will not see

Because 45 of the 54 localities we track sit at or above the 94% mark, the light itself changes for most of the country — and that is worth planning your evening around. Expect a flat, cold, slightly metallic quality to the daylight, as if someone had turned the contrast up and the brightness down at once. Shadows go unusually crisp, because a crescent Sun is a much smaller light source than a round one. The temperature drops perceptibly, wind often changes, birds go quiet or head to roost. Under trees, and anywhere with small gaps, the ground fills with crescents.

And here is what you will not see, said plainly, because pretending otherwise ruins people’s evening: no corona, no solar prominences, no planets or stars, no 360° twilight on the horizon, no streetlights coming on, and not one second when it is safe to look without a filter. Those belong to totality, and totality is not in Ireland this time. What you get is a deep, strange and genuinely memorable partial eclipse — which is a fine reason to go outside, and a poor reason to pretend it is something else.

5. Photographs, kids and telescopes

Phones. A phone photograph of a partial eclipse without a filter is a white blob. The trick that actually works is to hold a spare pair of eclipse glasses flat over the lens and shoot through it — you will get a small orange crescent. Better still, photograph the scene rather than the Sun: the strange light, the crescent shadows, the faces.

Cameras, binoculars and telescopes need a proper solar filter fitted over the front aperture, never over the eyepiece, and never an eclipse-glasses lens held loose. Without one you will damage the equipment and, far worse, your eyes.

Children. Glasses that are too big slip; supervise constantly, or skip direct viewing entirely and run a pinhole projector. A colander held over a sheet of white card produces dozens of crescent Suns and is, honestly, more fun than the glasses.

6. The weather, and a plan B

Irish August weather cannot be forecast this far out, and this site does not pretend to: check Met Éireann, the national meteorological service, in the final days and have a second viewing spot in mind.

A useful Irish habit for this: because the eclipse is low in the west-north-west, you do not need a clear sky, you need a clear gap in the right place. A grey day with a bright western strip at the horizon can work perfectly, and a beautiful blue day with a bank of cloud sitting on the western sea will not. Watch the satellite picture on the afternoon itself and keep a second spot twenty or thirty minutes away in a different direction — that is a realistic backup on this island, whereas “drive to the far coast” is usually not.

Check the forecast at Met Éireann. This site publishes no cloud statistics for Ireland, because we have not computed any, and inventing them would be worse than saying so.

7. The star recommendation: go and see a total one

This is the recommendation we would give a friend. If you can travel, travel. The difference between 97.1% and 100% is not a matter of degree — the corona only appears when the photosphere is completely covered, and everything people describe about totality (the temperature crash, the horizon glowing all the way round, the stars, the silence) belongs to those seconds alone. Two destinations the same evening, both real, both in our own datasets:

Iceland — a capital city inside the path

Reykjavík gets 1m 02s of totality with the Sun 24.5° above the horizon — far higher and far safer, weather-wise, than the near-sunset totality further south. It is about 1,494 km from Dublin in a straight line: for most people in Ireland this is the shortest journey to a total eclipse they will ever be offered. Northern Spain — the long band

The path crosses the Spanish mainland from the Galician–Asturian coast to the Balearics. Cariño (A Coruña) is where it comes ashore, with 1m 47s of totality about 1,075 km from Dublin; deeper into the band, Navia (Asturias) reaches 1m 53s, the longest in our Spanish dataset. 8. After the eclipse, and the next ones

Stay out. It is the first total solar eclipse visible from mainland Spain since 1905, and that same night coincides with the peak of the Perseid meteor shower (source: IGN). If the sky clears after dark on 12 August you can go straight from the eclipse to the Perseids from the same spot — and unlike the eclipse, that one needs no filter, no equipment and no west-facing horizon.

Looking further ahead: The next ones: a total eclipse on 2 August 2027 (Cádiz and Málaga, southern Spain) and an annular eclipse on 26 January 2028 (source: IGN). For anyone in Ireland who catches the bug on 12 August, those are the next realistic European targets — and the reason a lot of people book a flight the week after their first deep partial.
