The map of the Irish eclipse
On the evening of Wednesday, 12 August 2026 the whole island sees a very deep partial eclipse, and it deepens in a straight gradient from the north-east to the south-west: 93.7% of the Sun covered on the Louth coast, 97.1% in Co. Kerry. Every dot below is one of the 54 towns and cities in our dataset, shaded by its own computed figure — and none of them is inside the path of totality.

This map is our own approximation. Each dot is one locality from our dataset, placed by a simple equirectangular projection and coloured by its computed obscuration — no coastline is drawn and this is not the official track of the Moon’s shadow. It cannot be: the path of totality does not touch Ireland at all. What the map does show honestly is the gradient — how the eclipse deepens towards the south-west — and where each town sits on it. Mind the hour: maximum falls between 19:07 and 19:13 (Irish Standard Time (IST, UTC+1)) with the Sun only 14.4–16.6° above the horizon. Pick a spot with a completely open view to the west-north-west.
How to read this map
Share of the Sun covered
The darker the dot, the more of the Sun disappears at maximum. The scale is stretched over the real range of the dataset — 93.7% to 97.1% — which is why a difference of three and a half points looks dramatic here: on the ground the whole country gets a deep partial.

How this map was made, and what it is not
We drew no coastline. The 54 dots are the localities of our Irish dataset, projected equirectangularly: longitudes multiplied by the cosine of the mean latitude (0.596) so the country keeps roughly its real proportions, then scaled to fit. The circumstances behind each dot — percentage, times, Sun altitude — come from the same computation that feeds every locality page: JPL DE440s ephemerides, evaluated at each town’s own coordinates, with all times in Irish Standard Time (IST, UTC+1).
What this map is not: an official shadow track, an isoline chart, or a cloud-cover forecast. Ireland lies outside the path of totality entirely — the nearest place where the Sun is completely covered is Reykjavík, 1m 02s of totality about 1,494 km from Dublin, and then northern Spain.
