The shape of the afternoon

The whole event, first contact to last, spans about 2 h 0 min in the capital. It is a mid-afternoon eclipse: mid-August Reykjavík has long daylight, but this has nothing to do with the midnight sun — at 17:48 the Sun will simply be where a Sun is at ten to six on an August afternoon, about 24.5° up over the western sky. High enough to clear rooftops and hills from almost any open spot; low enough to sit beautifully over the landscape.

Two numbers to hold on to: 17:48 (glasses off, totality begins) and 17:49 (glasses back on). Everything else is build-up and wind-down. The timeline

  1. Before 16:47

    Get in position with time to spare

    Pick your spot with an open view toward the west and be there early. The Sun will stand at about 24.5° of altitude through maximum — roughly a quarter of the way up the sky — so you do not need a special horizon, just no tall building or hillside immediately west of you. Have your certified glasses (EN ISO 12312-2:2015) in hand and check the sky forecast one last time at en.vedur.is.

  2. 16:47

    First contact: the partial phase begins

    Through eclipse glasses you see the Moon take the first, tiny bite out of the Sun's western edge. Without a filter you would notice nothing at all — the day looks completely normal for a long while. Glasses on for every look from this moment.

  3. 16:47–17:38

    The bite grows — and the world barely reacts

    For most of the 61 minutes of the growing partial phase the light hardly seems to change: the eye adapts ruthlessly well. Through the filter, the Sun becomes a thick crescent, then a thin one. If there are trees nearby, look at the ground: gaps between leaves project dozens of little crescent suns.

  4. 17:38–17:48

    The last minutes: the light goes strange

    Now it accelerates. The daylight takes on a flat, silvery, wrong-time-of-day quality; shadows sharpen; the temperature drops noticeably; wind can shift; birds react. The western sky darkens as the Moon's shadow approaches. These are the minutes people remember.

    Diamond ring and Baily's beads — glasses off

    The last slivers of photosphere shine through lunar valleys as brilliant points (Baily's beads), collapsing into one final flare on the rim: the diamond ring. When the last bead vanishes, the filter comes off. Naked eye, binoculars down, look up.

  6. 17:48–17:49

    TOTALITY: 1m 02s in Reykjavík

    The corona — the Sun's outer atmosphere, a pearly-white crown of streamers — surrounds the black disc of the Moon. The sky darkens to deep twilight; bright planets and stars can appear; the horizon glows sunset-orange in every direction. Mid-totality is 17:48. Do not spend all 1m 02s looking through a camera: this is the sight of a lifetime, and in the capital it is short.

  7. 17:49

    Second diamond ring — glasses back on immediately

    A bead of sunlight bursts out on the opposite rim: totality is over. The instant it appears, filters go back on for any further look at the Sun. The temptation to keep staring "one more second" is exactly how eyes get hurt.

  8. 17:49–18:47

    The waning partial phase

    The whole show runs in reverse — crescents fattening, light warming back to normal — until the Moon leaves the disc at 18:47. Most people drift away during this hour; if you stay, you will have the calm version of the afternoon to yourself.

What to do — and what not to

Do

  • Decide in advance what your 1m 02s are for. First-timers: just look. The corona, the horizon glow, the people around you. A phone on a small tripod recording wide video captures the atmosphere without costing you the moment.
  • Dress for standing still in Icelandic weather. You will be outdoors for up to two hours, the eclipse itself cools the air further, and August in Iceland can serve wind and drizzle on any given day. Layers, hat, waterproof shell.

  • Rehearse the glasses-on moment. Know that at 17:49 — or when the second diamond ring flares, whichever your eyes notice first — the filter goes back on without discussion.

Don't

  • Don't look at any partial phase without a certified filter — not "just a glance", not through clouds, not through a camera viewfinder. Full rules in the Iceland eye-safety guide.
  • Don't spend totality fiddling with camera settings you never tested. An untested plan costs you the corona and produces bad photos anyway.
  • Don't plan to drive during the last half hour before totality. You want to be parked, settled and looking up — and the roads inside the narrow Icelandic path will be busier than the map suggests.
  • Don't expect night. Totality's darkness is a deep, eerie twilight, not blackness — and it lasts 1m 02s here, so let your eyes drink it rather than your screen.
