The one rule: EN ISO 12312-2:2015
To look directly at the Sun during the partial phases of the eclipse — which in Iceland run from 17:00 to around 18:43–18:49 local time, with roughly one minute of totality in between if you are inside the path — there is exactly one class of safe equipment: solar viewers certified to the EN ISO 12312-2:2015 standard (the international standard for filters for direct observation of the Sun). A compliant filter transmits only about a hundred-thousandth of visible light and blocks ultraviolet and infrared to levels safe for direct viewing.
The critical point is that apparent darkness proves nothing. A piece of dark plastic, an exposed photographic negative or a smoked glass can look "dark enough" and still pass dangerous amounts of infrared radiation that you cannot feel until the damage is done. The retina has no pain receptors: solar retinopathy is painless while it happens. So the criterion is never "it looks dark" — it is "the EN ISO 12312-2 marking is printed on the filter itself, and the manufacturer is traceable".
The authoritative reference on which viewers and suppliers are safe is the American Astronomical Society's Solar Eclipse Task Force list of safe suppliers, maintained since the 2017 American eclipse precisely because that event triggered a wave of counterfeit glasses. The same physics and the same standard apply in Iceland, in Spain, and everywhere else: a viewer that is genuinely compliant with EN ISO 12312-2 is safe on any continent.
Where to get certified glasses for an Iceland trip
Our honest advice, in order of preference:
- Buy before you travel, from a supplier on the AAS list. Order weeks ahead, verify the printed marking when the glasses arrive, and pack them in a hard case (a filter with scratches, pinholes or a delaminating film goes in the bin, not in your hand luggage). Every verification step in our full certified-glasses checklist — the literal "EN ISO 12312-2:2015" marking, an identifiable manufacturer, physical inspection against a lamp — applies unchanged to glasses you take to Iceland. The verified-supplier lists used in Spain (the AAS list and the Spanish verifier eclipseseguro.es) are checking the same international standard, so a pair that passes them is exactly as safe in Reykjavík as in Burgos.
- Check Iceland's official eclipse portal, eclipse2026.is. It is the national reference for the event and the right place to look for local, on-the-ground information about the day, including any official guidance on obtaining viewers in Iceland.
- If you must buy in Iceland, apply the checklist on the spot. We have not audited any Icelandic shop, so — unlike for Spain — we deliberately name none. Whatever the shop, the test is identical: the EN ISO 12312-2:2015 marking printed on the viewer itself, a manufacturer you can find on the AAS list, and a physical inspection before use. A tourist-shop viewer with no marking is a hard no, however close to eclipse day you are.
One planning note that matters more in Iceland than almost anywhere: the towns inside the path are small — Hellissandur has around 500 inhabitants, Patreksfjörður around 700 — and eclipse-day demand will not be small. Do not plan on buying safe filters in a village shop on 12 August. Bring them.
The Icelandic particular: a Sun 24–26° up, mid-afternoon
Here is what makes Iceland unusually comfortable for this particular eclipse. Across the 97 Icelandic settlements we track, maximum eclipse comes between 17:44 and 17:50 local time (Iceland is UTC+0 all year, no daylight saving), with the Sun at about 20–26° of altitude over the western sky — 24–26° inside the path of totality (our own computation per locality, JPL DE440s ephemerides).
Twenty-five degrees is roughly a quarter of the way from the horizon to the zenith: high enough that ordinary buildings, hills or a line of trees will rarely block it, low enough that you can watch and photograph it with landscape in the frame. Contrast that with mainland Spain the same afternoon, where totality arrives with the Sun at roughly 2–12° and a clean western horizon becomes the whole game. In Iceland, almost any open spot with a view toward the west works — you do not need a summit, a coastline or a rooftop.
And one myth to retire before anyone packs: this is not a midnight-sun event. Mid-August Reykjavík has long days but ordinary ones, with real nights; the eclipse happens in full mid-afternoon daylight, and the darkness you will experience during totality is the Moon's doing, not the calendar's.
The one exception: totality, and only totality
Inside the path of totality — western Iceland from the Westfjords through Snæfellsnes to the capital area, see the map — there is a moment when the glasses must come off: the interval when the Moon covers 100% of the solar disc. With the filter on you would see nothing at all; with the naked eye you see the corona. The discipline, in Reykjavík's numbers (full Reykjavík page):
- Glasses on from first contact at 16:47 through the whole growing partial phase.
- Glasses off when the last bead of photosphere vanishes — the diamond ring, around 17:48. Totality in the capital lasts 1m 02s.
- Glasses back on immediately when the second diamond ring flares, around 17:49, and for the waning partial phase until 18:47.
- Outside the path — Akureyri, Vík, the East Fjords, everywhere the eclipse stays partial — there is no safe naked-eye moment. 99% covered is not 100%: the remaining sliver of photosphere is still dangerously bright.

What never to use
- Sunglasses, of any category, stacked in any number.
- Camera film, X-ray film, CDs/DVDs, smoked glass — the classic myths; none filters UV/IR in a controlled way.
- Uncertified welding glass of unknown shade (only shade 14 is considered comparable, and most household pieces are not).
- Damaged eclipse glasses: scratches, pinholes, loose film — discard.
- Any camera, phone zoom, binoculars or telescope pointed at the partial phases without a proper solar filter on the front of the lens. Optics concentrate sunlight; a filter at the eyepiece — or eclipse glasses worn behind a viewfinder — will fail catastrophically. Front-mounted certified filters only.
With children: same rules, plus supervision. Check their glasses physically before each use — travel is hard on cardboard frames — and rehearse the "glasses back on" moment before totality ends rather than during it.

Is it safe to look at the 2026 eclipse in Iceland without glasses?
Only during totality — the brief interval when the Moon covers 100% of the Sun — and only if you are inside the path of totality. In Reykjavík that window lasts 1m 02s, roughly 17:48–17:49 local time. During every partial phase, before and after totality, you need eclipse glasses that meet EN ISO 12312-2:2015. Outside the path (the rest of Iceland sees a deep partial eclipse) there is no safe moment without them.
Do sunglasses work for watching a solar eclipse?
No. Sunglasses — even the darkest category-4 lenses — transmit thousands of times more light than a certified solar filter, and they do not control ultraviolet and infrared. Only filters certified to EN ISO 12312-2:2015 are safe for looking directly at the Sun.

Will the Sun be high enough to see the eclipse in Iceland?
Yes, comfortably. Our own computation for every Iceland locality we track puts the Sun at about 20–26° above the western horizon at maximum eclipse (24–26° inside the path of totality), between 17:44 and 17:50 local time. That is much higher than the near-sunset totality most of Spain gets the same afternoon — almost any open view toward the west will do.
